BTS Oxygen Guideline 2017

The British Thoracic Society (BTS) have launched a guideline for oxygen use in adults in healthcare and emergency settings. The guideline covers a range of topics including blood gas physiology, prescribing, target saturations, weaning and audit.

The guideline covers:

  • General blood gas physiology
  • Advanced blood gas physiology
  • Hypoxia, hypoxaemia, hyperoxaemia, hypercapnia and the rationale of targeted oxygen therapy
  • Clinical and laboratory assessment of hypoxaemia and hypercapnia
  • Emergency oxygen use in hospital settings
  • Practical aspects of oxygen therapy
  • Prescription, administration and monitoring of oxygen therapy
  • Weaning and discontinuation of oxygen therapy
  • Outcomes and audit
  • Dissemination and implementation of the guideline and education of healthcare professionals
  • Areas requiring further research
