The BMA Foundation for Medical Research awards research grants each year (totalling approximately £780,000) to encourage and further medical research in a variety of areas. One of these grants, the HC Roscoe, is to assist research into the elimination of the common cold and/or other viral diseases of the human respiratory system.

The National Asthma and COPD Audit Programme (NACAP) has launched registration for its pulmonary rehabilitation workstream. All pulmonary rehabilitation services that provide care for people with COPD in England, Scotland and Wales are eligible to register for and participate in this audit.

Front-line clinicians at Derby Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust have developed a system of colour-coded silicone wristbands which state the patient’s target saturation range, designed to ensure the correct level of oxygen is prescribed.

The British Thoracic Society (BTS) have launched a guideline for oxygen use in adults in healthcare and emergency settings. The guideline covers a range of topics including blood gas physiology, prescribing, target saturations, weaning and audit.
