About Us

The Scottish Thoracic Society is the professional society for respiratory medicine in Scotland, representing physicians, specialist nurses, pulmonary function physiologists, respiratory physiotherapists, and those in training.

Sub-Speciality Societies

Our focus is to improve respiratory health in our patients by: improving education both of health care professionals, and the general public; raising awareness of respiratory illness, and care within Scotland; and by providing expert opinion to Scottish Government on matters relating to respiratory health. The society is responsible for the co-ordination of training of respiratory physicians in Scotland, providing a comprehensive program of educational meetings through a 3 year rotation of topics. Scotland wide expertise is utlised for national level training, to allow equal access to all trainees throughout the country. The society organises an annual meeting, usually in the Spring, which includes: keynote talks from distinguished international experts; presentations of research carried out in Scotland; poster presentations of audit, quality improvement projects, and research projectss; and lively debates over ‘hot topics’ within respiratory medicine in Scotland.

Within the field of respiratory medicine in Scotland there are sub-speciality societies, including The Scottish Sleep Forum, The Scottish ILD Group, The Scottish Bronchiectasis Group, The West of Scotland Difficult Asthma Group. These societies function under the umbrella of the STS – infomation on these societies can be found within this website.
